Retrograde motion: what is actually happening?

Why a planet can appear to move backwards in our sky without reversing its orbit.

An apparent change of direction

Retrograde motion describes how a planet appears to move against the background stars when viewed from Earth. It does not mean the planet has suddenly reversed its orbit around the Sun.

A moving viewpoint

Earth is moving too. For outer planets, apparent backwards motion occurs as Earth overtakes them. The changing viewing angle can produce a loop or backwards segment in the planet's observed path. This is an astronomical geometry effect.

Keep symbolism separate

Astrologers may attach themes such as review or reconsideration to retrograde periods. Those interpretations are separate from the physical explanation. An apparent change in motion is not evidence that your communication, travel or relationships must go wrong.
